In this world, beings exist beyond our physical comprehension. Some view them as spirits, some as unique gods, and some as part of the unfathomable divine source. Regardless, they teach us a deeper appreciation of death through our relationships with them. Study of the Spirits allows us to explore death through the lenses of our beliefs. An individual studying this subject will choose how to approach it based on their own spirituality. They will understand how their spirituality influences their view of death, and how death influences them in return.

REQUIRED ACTIVITIES

If an individual belongs to a particular faith, they must research their religion’s views on death and the afterlife. Consider the following questions:

  • What does my religion teach about the afterlife? Do my actions in the physical world affect what happens to me in the afterlife?
  • What does my religion teach about the dead?
  • What does my religion teach about death and dying?
  • How are all of these things depicted in my religion’s mythology?
  • What are my beliefs regarding what happens to me after I die? Do they influence how I live?

If an individual does not belong to any particular faith, either because they are still seeking or because their beliefs are uniquely individual, they must decide what role death plays in their spirituality. Consider the following questions:

  • What mythologies on death and the dead are spiritually significant to me?
  • Which gods do I worship, if any, are related to death and the dead? How can I come to a deeper understanding of them and of their death-related aspects?
  • What are my beliefs regarding what happens to me after I die? Do they influence how I live?
  • How does my religious practice include the dead? How important is it for me to include them?

If an individual is an atheist or agnostic, but still finds a sense of spirituality in working with spirits of the dead, they must consider how these spirits influence their relationship with death. Consider the following questions:

  • Why are the types of spirits I work with (plant, animal, human, land, man-made, etc.) significant to me?
  • Why is it important that I work with these spirits?
  • What is my view on death and dying? How is my work with these spirits related to death and dying?
  • What are my beliefs regarding what happens to me after I die? Do they influence how I live?
